Shot in my backyard yesterday , brought a Sigma 50mm EX DG Macro lens yesterday after waiting for 2 years. This is one of my first trial with lens. Macro lens are versatile for both portrait and macro . I was tempted to buy the canon nifty fifty but I wanted something which was versatile so that I dont have to carry many lens. So my kit now has the 18-200mm all purpose lens and now 50mm Macro lens.
Hope my investment is justified

The first impression of Eiffel from Boat cruise at river siene. Had to wait for some time to click the image so that I could capture the tower with the train passing by.

It is said that when the Eiffel was completed it was supposed to be the ugliest structure in Paris. Critics used to say that best way to enjoy Paris was to have a dinner in the restaurant on Eiffel as that is the only place from which the eiffel is not visible.

Two months back I got myself a Bicycle, I wanted to get in Shape and also wanted to reduce my carbon footprint. ( My wife being very skeptical as with all my exercise equipment this too will gather dust in my collection).But I was determined and got the Bike. It has pretty good specs full suspension, disc brakes, 18 shimano gears and what not.

So when I started two months back 20 Kilometers on each day to my office and back seemed very daunting and it was .First 10 days were painful and it wasnt easy to handle my kid after coming from office. But as they say it requires 42 days to build a habit and so it was. Now I dont want to miss cycling to my office any day.

Not only have i recovered the cost of cycle but now I dont feel guilty having that extra portion of Icecream

M4 Motorway - New cam

I have sinned , I have gone ahead and bought a new camera and above that have bought a camera from samsung :0

Ok so here is the story, my wife fed up with my bulky canon400d wanted something she can carry around and click photos of my son whenever she wanted and secondly she is also getting enthused in photography.

So I decided on buying a new cam and started my research which lasted 2 months (yes I am very finicky about technology and need to know everything before I buy),the criteria were

1) budget (of course) - 150 pounds
2) good brand
3) Point and shoot with video (handy cams are too bulky and non versatile , already one in my attic gathering dust)

The technology didn't progress much from the last time I got my Canon 400d DSLR. The major changes that struck point and shoot were
1) All those funny presets like smile detection, beauty shots,color swap,50 different scene mode and etc. etc. which I seriously believe are marketing gimmicks
2)Optical and digital image stabilization works really well in long zoom and low light
3) HD video, some of the P&S started giving out seriously good video quality, all digicams have 640*480 video mode which is so so. Some digicams are coming out with 720p and 1080p resolution video recording which offers amazing clarity(and really big file size)
4)Zoom - with maximum given by Canon sx1 (20x). This is seriously important as it gives better working area and much better composition,but higher the zoom the more bulkier the cam.

Some of niche but very desirable features present in new P & S were

1) HDR sensors - like the ones from fuji film, I would love to get my hands on newgen fujifilm camera (exr series) which have the best image sensor in industry and If you are aiming to spend more time in parties then these are the ones to buy they have best low light shooting in industry like Fujifilm f100fd (almost bought this one review here )
2)Super Slow motion - Ok not for photography but wouldnt you love to make a matrix movie of your own . Some of the cams can shoot at 500fps (yup and they still fit in your pocket)and when run in normal 30fps the moment captured is phenomenal. Example New Sanyo Xacti series
3)All weather cameras - these are the ones which I almost bought as they weather any weather. Meaning you can take them to snorkelling,skiing, mountaineering and whatever your imagination takes you to. Examples optio w60, olympus tough series or olympus sw series. the only drawback zoom is only 3x and image quality is not upto the mark. but these do complement SLR very well, SLR being delicate and these being tough
4) touch screen controls - need I say more

Ok so what did I do after doing so much research, I jotted down my specific requirements as below

1)HD video a must
2)Zoom minimum 10x
3)should be compact
4)should have manual mode
5)Image quality should be good at least in moderate light (All cams can click good images (quality wise) in good light even your mobile camera)
6) budget (upped to 200 pounds)

I started of with my Fav Canon , to my dissappointment none of the Canon current models came close to any of the requirement , the canon s series s5,s7 or sx are either too bulky or too costly. Moved on to Sony and here the choices were even more limited. Olympus tough series was too tempting was about to buy one but after seeing the passable image quality dumped it.

Then chanced upon to look at a friends Panasonic TZ3 and was instantly impressed the current model was TZ which met all above requirements and had an amazing image quality thanks to it amazing optics (from leica). It had HD video though in quicktime format and files were huge but I was ready for that and so started hunting for best price. To my utter dissappointment the camera was in short supply due to newly announced TZ7 and hence the camera which was originally 180pounds was being sold at 220 pounds and was only available at few dealers. I wanted to wait fro tz7 but it was priced at 350pounds which was too high for me.

As I was losing heart my search chanced upon Samsung (yuck) WB500 or hz10w. Announced feb 2009 and available in March met all my requirements. hd video, 10x zoom, manual mode priced 200 pounds. But not even in my dreams I could think of buying sammy. But then with amazons amazing return policy, I was ready to give it a try.

So when it arrived and I tested It ,I was surprised sammy has upped the ante and the image quality though not canon standard was decent enough . The low light performance was not good but then none of camera apart from fuji have that capability
the features were
1)Manual focus (Jaw drop)
2)Auto exposure bracketting
3)Manual mode
4)Great lens
5)HD video
6)10x zoom
7)And 24mm on wide angle (match that, compact cam have minimum of 28mm or 25 mm in case of Panasonic)Panorama here I come !!!

So along with all p&s gimmicks it had features that i never thought to have had in a compact camera

And believe me it is small, it will fit in my shirt pocket but not as small to go unnoticed.

Though I am still skeptical but I am putting the camera through paces. I wouldn't suggest this camera to any one who is very very finicky about image quality (go and buy DSLR or wait for SIGMA DP2 to be launched)

All in all lets see how this relationship turns out to be and oh please remember this camera was brought for my wife and not me ;)

If you are wondering that what ENT is then it is not the species of this tree. I picked up the word from JRR Tolkiens-Lord of the rings . One of my all time favorite book and movie.

Ent were living tree's which could move around and had tremendously long lives. The novel so vividly described them that when I took this shot I actually remebered the ENT. I read the book 5 years back.

Wales Trip

This time around rather then posting a single image I have sat down to write a travelogue. There is more information for a new technique of photography called Geotagging at the end of the blog

We made a trip to wales on last weekend. Some of my musings of the same have been described below.

As always a long weekend was arriving and I my lazy self hadn't planned for any particular outing. Once my wife showed me her glaring eyes on Monday (28th April)that I swung into action ;). As it would have a trip to Scotland and Swiss was out of question as we hadn't booked earlier.

A little poking around revealed a beautiful country of Wales part of UK but not of england. I and chida ( my friend along with whom I was planning this journey) started looking for a place to stay, what was revealed to us was that Wales is waste if you go and stay in a hotel and are planning to go by Train.

So we went around searching for a car rental and the validity of my Indian License to drive in UK? As luck would have it the Indian license was valid for twelve month in UK.So we hired a Car Vauxhall Astra 1.6 and booked a cottage in Trefach, Blaenfoss, Pembrokeshire. The cottage was set in farmhouse of the main road and was typical english countryside that your have read in Enid Blyton novels. The only thing left was to buy a map and get started. A revelation hit us that time , this was not India and if you are lost you wont be able to ask a by-passer for the correct road as the roads would be secluded and empty. We went ahead and hired a GPS system.

Now we were all ready for a trip to wales.

Day1

We started at around 10 am on Saturday 3/05/08 . Had a few qualms about driving at first as there are so many rules in Uk not like India where you can drive as you like :(. This photo was clicked on M4 motorway on one of the recreation and service centre. The car was amazing with power steering, abs, power windows and tubeless tyres. I was able to manage 100 miles per hour at some time.

Our first stop was Carmarthen National botanical garden. An amazing and beautiful garden with large

variety of flowers and plants. the Image that you see is the one inside the park. There is Glass dome with tropical forest environment setup inside it. There are are many places with tulips growing variety of colors. To view the complete set click here.

Finally after driving for a whole day we reached our destination Trefach. This farmhouse housed our treasured
cottage. The 18th century cottage was tastefully renovated with 3 bedrooms, a huge hall and self catering kitchen. We couldn't have reached this place without out trusty GPS guiding us.The house itself was amazing to have spent a whole week reading the best novel and having wine or tea in the sun. Day 2

Woke a little late and then had a our breakfast, We had taken lot of ready eat, breads, Jams and butter along with some nice Chai. Had our breakfast and then left for the Poppit Sands Beach. The overcast day didn't dampen our spirit. Poppit sands was an amazing place the beach had Grey sand. It was windy on the beach but scenery felt amazing. spent around 2 hrs there and then came back to the cottage for nice lunch. Day3

After relaxing on the day two , today was the day of action we covered lot of places today and as the day was warm and sunny has some great pictures shot.
We left early today for Abereiddy Lagoon. As it was early morning we were treated with morning mist as this lagoon.

We then drove to Whitesands beach. It had a amazing landscape with white sands facing a small cliff. We had our lunch here sitting on one of the cliff looking over the sea. The problem here is that u can easily miss the sunset or sunrise as in summers the sun sets at around 8 in night and rises at around 4 in morning.to view full set click here

On way we covered the Fish guard port and then back to home for a nice sleep.

Day 4

Our last day at wales, we went and covered the cilgerran castle and river teifi in the morning and then left for Reading.

During this trip I used a new technique of photography getting very popular these days "GeoTagging". This technique generally involves tagging your photos with lattitude and longitude of the place so that they are visible on Maps like google earth and flickr maps. this way you can tell people where whic image was clicked. Some new cameras have have GPS . for me I used a simple technique is use picasa and google earth to tag my photos . Upon uploading these photos to flickr they are recognised automatically as geo tagged and placed on the flickr map. Just let picasa find your images. then slecting the image go to tools and select google earth . google earth opens with picasa image selected you can then just place the crosshair on the desired location. London Eye

The London Eye. Managed by the British Airways is called "the Flight". One revolution takes around 1/2 hour and is pretty amazing experience. The only thing is not amazing is the price . But maybe for London it is still decently priced.

On the bank of river Thames , through the eye you can glimpse most of the london and its history , maybe that is why it is called an eye.

The Big Ben

Not very good at my geography ,I always thought that Big Ben was in US (excuse my GK).
When my wife told me that this Big Ben, I actually thought of debating her then left it at that. The architecture is amazing . Guy Fawkes tried to blow the parliament which you can see in the bacjground.

Harvest Inn

This is the harvest inn in prospect park . Seems to be a mansion of a wealthy owner turned into a restaurant. The coffee here was quite good considering the day was sunny and the chairs were arranged in the verandah.

Naval College

The college campus is amazingly beautiful and full of greenery . Even at a dull day like this it was colorful.

The sky is always overcast these days so cant avoid the bad lighting condition. The HDR comes handy in these situations.

Many people still think that HDR is a processing and makes image unreal. But somewhere I wish my camera had HDR as my eyes. Many camera comapnies are investing in HDR equipment and I am sure a day is not far when we have cameras as good as our eyes.

No, it is not a scale model of london. It is a original photograph clicked from London eye. Fake is that it is not a model but made to look like one using tilt and shift technique not of lens (tilt and shift lens..very costly) but a photoshop trick. You can find all about it here

This was shot from the Royal observatory of London at Greenwich - Zero time zone. Although the hill is not one tree hill, it is called as one. In background you can see the London skyline. It was actually drizzling in London at that time

Windsor

The Second home of British Monarchy, apart from Buckingham palace this is the place where the queen and his kin spend time. The third is the Edinburgh castle in Scotland.

There was obviously a charge to see how the queen lives-17 pounds. The best part about the trip was audio guides, these are small handy device which work on rfid technology, you just reach the place and press the play button to listen to the history of particular place, as many times as you want.

This was hot at nehru zoological park , hyderabad. I went there on sunday to click some clixs. But alas there was a huge weekend rush with around 10k people making a visit. The animals were not ready to show up.
